The Quiet Magic Before the Studio Comes to Life

One of my favourite moments in the gallery happens before anyone arrives.

The studio is quiet.

The easels are waiting, fresh paint is on the palettes, brushes are lined up and blank canvases stand ready for whatever the day might bring.

There's a lovely sense of anticipation in those few peaceful minutes. Soon the room will be filled with conversation, laughter and the quiet concentration that comes with creating something by hand.

What I enjoy most is knowing that although every student begins with the same blank canvas, no two paintings will be alike.

Each person brings their own ideas, favourite colours and unique way of seeing the world. Even when we're all painting the same subject, every finished artwork reflects the individual who created it.

That's one of the greatest joys of teaching.

Many people think they need talent before they can start painting, but I've found that confidence grows through practice, curiosity and simply being willing to have a go. Every lesson teaches a new skill, and every painting builds on the last.

Watching students surprise themselves with what they can achieve is one of the most rewarding parts of running the gallery.

The quiet studio before class reminds me that every artwork starts in exactly the same way—with a blank canvas and the decision to make that first brushstroke.

Everything else grows from there.
